Exciting week of stellar public performances! Summer Music Institute brings exceptional musicians from U.S., China, France, Germany

OTTAWA –  For the second week in a row, Ottawa music lovers can hear high-calibre, live performance by some of the most talented young classically-trained musicians in the world.

NAC Music Director Maestro Pinchas Zukerman created the Summer Music Institute 15 years ago. It's an exceptional music training institute that runs this year until June 29, welcoming students from most continents. And, after the first masterclass of the SMI, piano student Wei Sim offered, “a masterclass like this one is such a great experience, because you not only have not only the performance experience but also the opportunity to learn from such a high class teacher. It’s intimidating, but in a great way, because it really forces you to perform at your best and the instruction and the musical depth that the teacher gives is just amazing. I really appreciate what Ms. Kaplinsky taught me tonight about the Brahms.”

Masterclass student Silvie Cheng says “I think masterclasses like tonight give us not just specific ideas on interpretations of specific pieces, but a more generalized scope of what it means to be a musician and how to delve deeper into score reading. Specifically tonight, I think that Ms. Kaplinsky made the three of us very aware of the sound that we do create and the sound that we want to create, and in having that sound in your head you will then be able to produce the exact sound that you want.”

Silvie Cheng is becoming accustomed to delivering high-calibre performance. She and her brother performed a duo at Carnegie Hall April 20th. And yet, she still thrives on learning. Come to the SMI public masterclasses and concerts, and see the stars of the next wave of classical music performance.
