September 30, 2019 – OTTAWA (Canada) – ★★★★★A thing of raw and unmissable beauty.”Herald Scotland

Part high-energy musical and part darkly funny folktale, Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story stars genre-bending sensation Ben Caplan, one of Canada’s most riveting and compelling performers. Written by Ottawa’s own Hannah Moscovitch, this klezmer music-theatre hybrid is inspired by the true story of two Jewish Romanian refugees who immigrated to Canada in 1908.

It’s about how to love after being broken by the horrors of war. It’s about refugees who get out before it’s too late, and those who get out after it’s too late. And it’s about looking into the eyes of God.

“This extraordinary work from Halifax’s 2b theatre has been migrating from country to country for four years, wowing audiences in every single port of call. I’m thrilled to bring this show back to the NAC to celebrate one of the most widely lauded productions ever made by Canadian creators.” – Jillian Keiley, NAC English Theatre Artistic Director.

Shifting seamlessly between heartbreak and joy, Old Stock is about losing everything and finding the courage to begin again.

Nominated for six Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical, a New York Times Critic’s Pick and winner of Scotsman Fringe First Award, this spirited musical returns at the NAC after a smash tour of the UK.

Featuring Ben Caplan (The Wanderer), Eric Da Costa (Chaim, woodwinds), Mary Fay Coady (Chaya, violin), Kelsey McNulty (keyboard and accordion) and Jeff Kingsbury (drumkit).

The creative team includes Director Christian Barry; Assistant Director Laura Vingoe-Cram; Set and Lighting Designers Louisa Adamson and Christian Barry; Costume Designer Carly Beamish; Sound Designers Jordan Palmer, Graham Scott, Christian Barry and Ben Caplan; Voice and Speech Coach Susan Stackhouse; Stage and Production Manager Louisa Adamson, Tech Manager, Sound Engineer and Operator Rory Howson and Tour Producer Rebecca Desmarais.
