Gail and David O’Brien Donate $1.5 Million in Support of the NAC’s Strategic Plan

On March 24, 2016 the National Arts Centre unveiled its Strategic Plan for 2015–2020. Entitled “Canada is our Stage”, the new plan reinforces the NAC’s commitment to champion performance, creation and learning across Canada.

The Strategic Plan emphasizes the National Arts Centre’s vision to become a catalyst for creation over the next five years and beyond. The National Arts Centre will also launch an Indigenous Theatre Department and expand its successful Music Alive Program to Atlantic Canada. Other ambitious goals include taking a leadership role in using digital technology and making steady progress in strengthening relationships with Francophone audiences and artists in the National Capital Region, in Montreal and across the country.

Inspired by the National Arts Centre’s new vision for the performing arts in Canada, long-time donors Gail and David O’Brien, of Calgary and Toronto, are thrilled to announce an extraordinary gift of $1.5 million in support of the NAC’s future direction. Gail O’Brien, who is immediate Past Chair of the NAC Foundation Board of Directors and current Member of the NAC Board of Trustees said “David and I are proud to champion the performing arts across this country. I have long been committed to the work of the NAC, and am thrilled to contribute to this bold new chapter.”

Peter Herrndorf, President and CEO of the NAC, applauds the O’Briens’ generous gift, saying “Gail and David’s gift will support the NAC as it embarks on an era of excitement and change, of imagination and possibility. Thank you.”

ABOUT THE NAC

The National Arts Centre collaborates with artists and arts organizations across Canada to help create a national stage for the performing arts, and acts as a catalyst for performance, creation and learning across the country. A home for Canada’s most creative artists, the NAC strives to be artistically adventurous in each of its programming streams – the NAC Orchestra, English Theatre, French Theatre and Dance, as well as the Scene festivals and NAC Presents, which showcase established and emerging Canadian artists. The organization is at the forefront of youth and educational activities, offering artist training, programs for children and youth, and resources for teachers in communities across Canada. The NAC is also a pioneer in new media, using technology to teach students and young artists around the globe, by creating top-rated podcasts, and providing a wide range of NAC Orchestra concerts on demand. The NAC is the only bilingual, multidisciplinary performing arts centre in Canada, and one of the largest in the world.
