“Hate in unison ”

This powerful work is based entirely on the hateful comments that folk singer Safia Nolin receives constantly. The mirror doesn’t just reflect the face of an inspiring artist grappling with her identity; it also shows the terrifying reflection of a collective ugliness that has no name. 

Ever since Safia Nolin entered the music world, she’s repeatedly been the target of rampant insults about her body, her sexual orientation and her background. Rather than keeping quiet about this venomous speech, director Philippe Cyr asked Jean-Philippe Baril Guérard and Sofia, the work’s playwright, composer and performer, to turn it into a libretto. By loudly and proudly turning all the vitriol into song, the performers help banish it, as well as shatter the naïve belief that we are growing more tolerant as a society. 

The stage plays host to the targeted singer, armed with her guitar, as well as an impressive choir. It’s a moment of catharsis that also dispels any optimism we may have based on our shared similarities. The performance is an act of resistance and solidarity: Safia’s silhouette is no longer a scapegoat, but a beacon of beauty and courage in a Dark Ages 2.0.
