This June we are proud to bring you a special Indigenous edition of Capital Sessions featuring two incredible Indigenous artists!
DJ Pøptrt is an indigenous DJ and visual artist from the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawà:ke. As a Kanien’kehá:ka artist, she creates art with the influences of her culture and contemporary Pop-art. She began her DJ career in 2015 while studying media and art in Montréal. Pøptrt previously performed at Piknic Électronik, Future Forest, Igloofest, and is currently the resident DJ at Club Unity.
Makhena Rankin Guerin is a two-spirit anishinaabe and franco-ontarian artist from Ottawa, member of Abitibiwinni First Nation. They have been a traditional dancer their whole life, trying out multiple styles of indigenous dancing but settled with hoop dancing after starting 6 years ago. Mixing traditional styles with contemporary styles of dance is a common practice for Makhena as she developed her own style throughout the years by taking inspiration from multiple styles.
