  Photographer Edward Burtynsky

  Edward Burtynsky is regarded as one of the world’s most accomplished contemporary photographers. His remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes represent over 40 years of his dedication to bearing witness to the impact of humans on the planet. Burtynsky’s photographs are included in the collections of over 80 major museums around the world. Major (touring) exhibitions include: Anthropocene (2018); Water (2013) organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art & Contemporary Art Center, Louisiana; Oil (2009) at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; China (2005 five-year tour); and Manufactured Landscapes (2003) at the National Gallery of Canada. Burtynsky’s distinctions include the inaugural TED Prize in 2005, which he shared with Bono and Robert Fischell; the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts; the Outreach Award at the Rencontres d’Arles; the Roloff Beny Book Award; and the 2018 Photo London Master of Photography Award. In 2019 he was the recipient of the Arts & Letters Award at the Canadian Association of New York’s annual Maple Leaf Ball and the 2019 Lucie Award for Achievement in Documentary Photography. In 2020 he was awarded a Royal Photographic Society Honorary Fellowship and in 2022 was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award by the World Photography Organization. In 2022 he was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame and was named the 2022 recipient for the annual Pollution Probe Award. Most recently he received the 2023 PHotoESPAÑA Award for Professional Career and was awarded with the 25th edition of the Pino Pascali Prize. Burtynsky was also a key production figure in the award-winning documentary trilogy Manufactured Landscapes (dir. Jennifer Baichwal, 2006), Watermark (dir. Baichwal and Burtynsky, 2013), and ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch (dir. Baichwal, Nicholas de Pencier, and Burtynsky, 2018). All three films continue to play in festivals around the world. Burtynsky currently holds eight honorary doctorate degrees.

  “A natural communicator, both on and off the podium” (The Telegraph), Alexander Shelley performs across six continents with the world’s finest orchestras and soloists.

  With a conducting technique described as “immaculate” (Yorkshire Post) and a “precision, distinction and beauty of gesture not seen since Lorin Maazel” (Le Devoir), Shelley is known for the clarity and integrity of his interpretations and the creativity and vision of his programming. To date, he has spearheaded over 40 major world premieres, highly praised cycles of Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms symphonies, operas, ballets, and innovative multi-media productions.  

  Since 2015, he has served as Music Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and Principal Associate Conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In April 2023, he was appointed Artistic and Music Director of Artis–Naples in Florida, providing artistic leadership for the Naples Philharmonic and the entire multidisciplinary arts organization. The 2024-2025 season is Shelley’s inaugural season in this position.  

  Additional 2024-2025 season highlights include performances with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, and the National Symphony of Ireland. Shelley is a regular guest with some of the finest orchestras of Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australasia, including Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Helsinki, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Malaysian, Oslo, Rotterdam and Stockholm philharmonic orchestras and the Sao Paulo, Houston, Seattle, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Montreal, Toronto, Munich, Singapore, Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand symphony orchestras. 

  In September 2015, Shelley succeeded Pinchas Zukerman as Music Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the youngest in its history. The ensemble has since been praised as “an orchestra transformed ... hungry, bold, and unleashed” (Ottawa Citizen), and his programming is credited for turning the orchestra “almost overnight ... into one of the more audacious orchestras in North America” (Maclean’s). Together, they have undertaken major tours of Canada, Europe, and Carnegie Hall, where they premiered Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 13.

  They have commissioned ground-breaking projects such as Life Reflected and Encount3rs, released multiple JUNO-nominated albums and, most recently, responded to the pandemic and social justice issues of the era with the NACO Live and Undisrupted video series.

  In August 2017, Shelley concluded his eight-year tenure as Chief Conductor of the Nurnberger Symphoniker, a period hailed by press and audiences alike as a golden era for the orchestra.  

  Shelley’s operatic engagements have included The Merry Widow and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet (Royal Danish Opera), La bohème (Opera Lyra/National Arts Centre), Louis Riel (Canadian Opera Company/National Arts Centre), lolanta (Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen), Così fan tutte (Opera National de Montpellier), The Marriage of Figaro (Opera North), Tosca (Innsbruck), and both Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni in semi-staged productions at the NAC. 

  Winner of the ECHO Music Prize and the Deutsche Grunderpreis, Shelley was conferred with the Cross of the Federal Order of Merit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in April 2023 in recognition of his services to music and culture. 

  Through his work as Founder and Artistic Director of the Schumann Camerata and their pioneering “440Hz” series in Dusseldorf, as founding Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’s “Zukunftslabor” and through his regular tours leading Germany’s National Youth Orchestra, inspiring future generations of classical musicians and listeners has always been central to Shelley’s work. 

  He regularly gives informed and passionate pre- and post-concert talks on his programs, as well as numerous interviews and podcasts on the role of classical music in society. In Nuremberg alone, over nine years, he hosted over half a million people at the annual Klassik Open Air concert, Europe’s largest classical music event. 

  Born in London in October 1979 to celebrated concert pianists, Shelley studied cello and conducting in Germany and first gained widespread attention when he was unanimously awarded first prize at the 2005 Leeds Conductors’ Competition, with the press describing him as “the most exciting and gifted young conductor to have taken this highly prestigious award.”

  Il est depuis 2015 directeur musical de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts du Canada et premier chef associé de l’Orchestre philharmonique royal de Londres. En avril 2023, il a été nommé directeur artistique et musical d’Artis—Naples en Floride, prenant ainsi les rênes artistiques de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Naples et de tous les volets de cette organisation multidisciplinaire. La saison 2024–2025 est sa première à ce poste.

  Alexander Shelley a succédé à Pinchas Zukerman à titre de directeur musical de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts du Canada en septembre 2015, devenant le plus jeune chef à occuper ce poste dans l’histoire de l’ensemble. Ce dernier a depuis été qualifié de « transformé », « passionné », « ambitieux » et « déchaîné » (Ottawa Citizen) et classé parmi les plus audacieux en Amérique du Nord pour sa programmation (Maclean’s). Le maestro a mené ses troupes dans des tournées d’envergure au Canada, en Europe et au Carnegie Hall, où il a dirigé la première de la Symphonie no 13 de Philip Glass.

  À la tête de l’Orchestre du CNA, Alexander Shelley a commandé des œuvres révolutionnaires, dont Réflexions sur la vie et RENCONTR3S, et fait paraître plusieurs albums finalistes aux prix JUNO. En réaction à la pandémie et aux questions de justice sociale qui dominent notre époque, il a lancé les séries vidéo L’OCNA en direct et INCONDITIONNEL. 

  En août 2017 se concluait le mandat du maestro Shelley à la direction de l’Orchestre symphonique de Nuremberg, période décrite comme un âge d’or par la critique et le public.

  Sur la scène lyrique, Alexander Shelley a dirigé La veuve joyeuse et le Roméo et Juliette de Gounod (Opéral royal danois), La bohème (Opera Lyra / Centre national des Arts), Louis Riel (Compagnie d’opéra canadienne / Centre national des Arts), Iolanta (Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie de Brême), Così fan tutte (Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier), Les noces de Figaro (Opera North), Tosca (Innsbruck) ainsi que Les noces de Figaro et Don Giovanni en version semi-scénique au CNA.

  Lauréat du prix ECHO et du Deutsche Grunderpreis, le chef s’est vu décerner en avril 2023 la Croix fédérale du Mérite par le président allemand Frank-Walter Steinmeier en reconnaissance de ses services à la musique et à la culture.

  À titre de fondateur et directeur artistique de la Schumann Camerata et de sa série avant-gardiste 440Hz à Düsseldorf et de directeur artistique du projet Zukunftslabor de la Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie de Brême, ainsi que par ses nombreuses tournées à la tête de l’Orchestre national des jeunes d’Allemagne, il cherche constamment à inspirer les futures générations d’instrumentistes et d’adeptes de musique classique.

  Alexander Shelley fait régulièrement des présentations instructives et passionnées sur ses programmes avant et après les concerts. Il participe aussi à de nombreuses entrevues et produit des balados sur le rôle de la musique classique dans la société. Seulement à Nuremberg, il a accueilli en neuf ans plus d’un demi-million de personnes aux concerts annuels du Klassik Open Air, le plus grand événement de musique classique d’Europe.

  Né à Londres en octobre 1979 et fils de célèbres pianistes concertistes, Alexander Shelley a étudié le violoncelle et la direction d’orchestre en Allemagne. Il s’est d’abord signalé en remportant à l’unanimité le premier prix au Concours de direction d’orchestre de Leeds en 2005. La critique l’a décrit comme « le jeune chef d’orchestre le plus passionnant et le plus doué à avoir récolté ce prix hautement prestigieux ».
