The conductor and violinist Diego Matheuz is a graduate of the internationally known Venezuelan Sistema and is already widely known as one of the most promising developing talents from the Americas.
Matheuz made his international debut as a conductor in 2008, leading the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela in the prestigious Casals Festival in Puerto Rico. Following many successful debuts in Italy, Diego Matheuz became Principal Guest Conductor of Claudio Abbado’s Orchestra Mozart in Bologna in 2009. Since then career highlights have featured performances in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, in Berlin with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala on tour, and with the Frankfurt Radio, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Stockholm Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic and the Saito Kinen Orchestra in Japan and China.
In September 2011, Matheuz was appointed Principal Conductor of Teatro la Fenice in Venice. In 2011-2012 he makes debut appearances with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Hamburg Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Melbourne Symphony. On January 1, 2012 he conducted the prestigious New Year concert at Teatro la Fenice, broadcast live on RAI television.
Diego Matheuz first led the NAC Orchestra as a participant in the 2008 Summer Music Institute, and this evening’s concert marks his NAC main series debut.
