A Can’t Miss Comedy Hit!
Kim's Convenience
by Ins Choi NAC Theatre January 22 - February 8
A Soulpepper production

Ottawa, Ontario, January 7, 2014 – The National Arts Centre English Theatre is thrilled to present one of the most talked about comedies in years, Ins Choi’s Kim’s Convenience, running in the NAC Theatre January 22 – February 8.

For many years Korean immigrant Mr. Kim, also known as Appa, has worked hard to support his wife and children with his Toronto convenience store.  Now, as he nears retirement, he grapples with both a changing neighbourhood landscape and the chasm between him and his second-generation offspring.

Playwright/Actor Ins Choi writes from personal experience about intergenerational clashes in a Korean-Canadian family, giving this award-winning play a feeling of integrity and authenticity. A fractured but loving family, led by unforgettable patriarch, confronts an uncertain future while learning to forgive the past. Thoroughly funny and engaging, Kim’s Convenience reveals a corner of our own world. Here. And now.

Originally created as a vignette in 2005 under a playwriting unit in the Fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, Kim’s Convenience became the smash hit of the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival. In 2012, the play was remounted by Soulpepper to huge success, winning the Best New Canadian Play by the Toronto Theatre Critics.

Now on a national tour, this hilarious and touching play has quickly become a must see of 2013-14, and well on its way to becoming a Canadian Theatre classic.

"... the comedy is funny, and the emotions genuine. [Appa] made me laugh and he made me cry; and you can’t ask for more than that." - The National Post

Featuring Ins Choi, Grace Lynn Kung, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Andre Sills, and Jean Yoon.

The creative team includes: Director Weyni Mengesha; Remount Director Albert Schultz; Set and Costume Designer Ken MacKenzie; Lighting Designer Lorenzo Savoini; Sound Designer Thomas Ryder Payne; Fight Director Sean Baek; Alexander Coach Kelly McEvenue; Stage Manager Kat Chin and Assistant Stage Manager Neha Ross.
