National Arts Centre English Theatre Presents HAMLET (solo) By William Shakespeare Featuring Raoul Bhaneja Directed by Robert Ross Parker Hope and Hell Theatre Company in association with Richard Jordan Productions Ltd November 12 - 23, 2013 NAC Studio

You’ve never seen Hamlet quite like this! Shakespeare’s famous tragedy is performed by award-winning actor Raoul Bhaneja – playing all 17 roles himself. Hamlet (Solo) puts a fine point on the three most essential elements of theatre: The Actor, The Text and The Audience in this two-hour must-see phenomenon.

Created by Ottawa-natives and Canterbury High School graduates Raoul Bhaneja and director Robert Ross Parker, this unique retelling of one of Shakespeare's most popular classics combines the ancient art of storytelling and the modern one-man show. What they deliver is a Hamlet that is intimate and one where the relationship between actor and audience is very close.

Actor, musician, writer and producer, Mr. Bhaneja and New York-based director Mr. Parker began developing the project in 2000 while members of the Soulpepper Theatre Company. HAMLET (solo) opened in 2006 at Theatre Passe Muraille, and won the 2006 Montreal English Critics’ Circle Award for Best Visiting Production.

This sparse, focused production – a hit in the UK and New York – brings out all the majesty and meaning in the language and the complexity of the play. HAMLET (solo) is a dynamic and stunning virtuoso performance – pure potent, contemporary and thought-provoking theatre.

Raoul Bhaneja has appeared in over 75 film and television projects along with a long list of theatre productions. Feature film credits includeThe Sentinel, Ararat and Weirdsville and television credits include Train 48, The Dresden Files and guest appearances on CTV’s Raising Hope. Bhaneja is one of the few Canadians to have ever performed at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (London, UK).  The production has received rave reviews from across North America and the UK including The List, The Stage, nytheatre.com and Backstage.

“...Almost before he can take a bow his audience have leaped from their seats in a standing ovation.”  The List (U.K.)
