The National Arts Centre Orchestra welcomes Maestro Juraj Valčuha in his Canadian début Thursday, when he leads the orchestra in a sweeping concert of French Impressionist pieces – Debussy’s La Mer and Ravel’s Suite of Five Pieces from Ma Mère l'Oye (Mother Goose).

For music lovers who see colour and form when listening to music, this concert paints a sublime picture inspired by the aesthetics of the French Impressionist era. From painting and literature to music, the 19th century Impressionist school of thought emphasized the study of colour and light, rather than stating outright prescribed themes, as in the worship of heroicism in the Romantic era.

This concert offers a chance to see two celebrated musical stars – Maestro Valčuha, and a fantastic young soloist. Returning to Southam Hall is acclaimed American pianist Jonathon Biss, who brings his love of Mozart to a performance of Piano Concerto No.13 in C Major.
