In my notebook.
On my “must do” list.
I wrote right at the top.
Bring Caroline back to life.

A woman welcomes us to her kitchen. From the very first words, her story is an unsettling one. Her friend is dead—and it’s quite possibly the fault of the very woman who, uncomfortably seated across from us, is telling us about it. “I never laid a finger on her,” she maintains. True, but surely she could have lifted a finger to help her? La Liste (The List) is nothing less than a new kind of drama, a work that combines elements of narrative soliloquy, personal diary, dramatic monologue and grocery list.

A powerful social commentary, La Liste explores the nature of personal relationships in our modern society. Have we become slaves to our daily routine? The play exposes the myriad little oversights that disconnect us from our responsibility to one another.

Jennifer Tremblay’s La Liste has received three prestigious awards: the Governor General’s Literary Award for French Drama (2008), the Prix Michel?Tremblay (2010), and the Laurentian Bank of Canada Playwright’s Award (2009–10). La Liste is published by Les Éditions de la Bagnole.

Jennifer Tremblay was born in 1973 in Forestville, Quebec, on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. In 1990 she published Histoires de Foudre, a collection of poems. In 1995 she graduated in Creative Writing from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) and went on to publish short stories and articles in various magazines. She began her Master’s in literary research, an in-depth study of the novels of Dany Laferrière—at whose recommendation she dropped her studies in order to focus on her own writing projects. She wrote close to 100 episodes of the children’s television show Les Chatouilles (Radio?Canada) and a few episodes of Bouledogue Bazar. In 2004 she co?founded (with Martin Larocque) the independent publishing company Les Éditions de la Bagnole. She published her first novel, Tout ce qui brille, and several children’s books, including Un secret pour Matisse (A Secret for Matisse), Deux biscuits pour Sacha (Two Cookies for Sacha), Sacha et son sushi (Sacha and his Sushi), Miro et les Canetons du lac Vert (Miro and the Green Lake Ducklings), Madame Zia, and Matisse et les vaches lunaires (Matisse and the Moon Cows). In 2008 she received the Governor General’s Literary Award for French Drama for La liste, published by Les Éditions de la Bagnole.
