Building community through music:  Craig Kielburger will join 300 young singers from Ottawa and St. John’s, Newfoundland in a broadband performance

OTTAWA— The National Arts Centre (NAC) is thrilled to welcome internationally renowned children’s rights activist and co-founder of Free The Children Craig Kielburger to kick off the NAC Orchestra’s Atlantic Tour with a youth leadership project linking young singers in Ottawa with singers in St. John’s, Newfoundland in an interactive videoconference performance and lecture.

Two hundred top singers from leading Ottawa youth choirs will be singing with 100 members of Shallaway, an award-winning youth choir from Newfoundland, in a broadband videoconference performance at 12:00 p.m. in Ottawa and at 1:30 p.m. in St. John’s, on Sunday November 13, 2011.

Supported by the NAC’s New Media team, the young performers at the National Arts Centre will be linked via next-generation videoconference technology with the youth choir singing at the D.F. Cook Hall at Memorial University in St. John’s.

“It’s an exciting project that demonstrates young people trying to make a positive difference in their communities through music,” said Free The Children co-founder, Craig Kielburger. “Free The Children has built more than 650 schools and school rooms for young people around the world and we believe music is an important part of every child’s development.”

“When you think about community building through music, Atlantic Canada comes to mind immediately. We are excited to bring together some of the best young voices from St. John’s and Ottawa together through the innovative use of interactive videoconference technology,” said Genevieve Cimon the NAC’s Director of Music Education and Community Outreach.

Jackie Hawley, Artistic Director of the Ottawa Children’s Choir, will be conducting the 200 young singers at the National Arts Centre while Shallaway’s Artistic Director Kellie Walsh will be conducting 200 young people at Memorial University. This event will be broadcast live on nac-cna.ca.

The award-winning NAC New Media department will make the NAC Orchestra’s Atlantic Canada Tour accessible to all Canadians, who are invited to follow the tour online at NACOtour.ca for blogs, videos, podcasts, photos and more. Updates will also be posted on Twitter at #CanadasNAC, and on the NAC’s Facebook page.
