Vigilante
Book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Christenson
Directed by Jonathan Christenson
A Catalyst Theatre (Edmonton) Production in Collaboration with NAC English Theatre
premiere commissioned by the Citadel Theatre (Edmonton)
March 29 – April 15, 2017
March 13, 2017 – OTTAWA (Canada) – Five Stars! “Vigilante is a wonderful, rare theatre experience that should not be missed.” London Free Press
A raucous, wall-of-sound rock musical, Vigilante tells the explosive true tale of a ruthless Irish immigrant family and an entire town bent on revenge. Based on the unsolved 1880 massacre of Ontario’s notorious Donnelly family, Vigilante tells the shocking legend of Johannah Donnelly and her dangerous, yet devoted, sons.
Now the ghosts of the Donnellys return to tell their side of the story!
“I saw this piece twice: once in Fort McMurray, and again in Edmonton after Catalyst had returned from the off-Broadway run of its original production, Nevermore. I loved both iterations but the steampunk style and pulsing fury of the music was deep in my bones by the second viewing. Now to see it again will satisfy a craving that I’ve had ever since.” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre
A riveting tale about family, forgiveness and frontier justice, Vigilante marks the return of Edmonton’s astonishing Catalyst Theatre to the NAC, arriving from sold-out engagements at the Grand Theatre in London and Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon.
“Vigilante is a masterpiece of rock-inspired theatre.” – OurLondon.
