A short piece of writing from Jess Watkin's play in process "Are Angels Not Monsters Too?" Jess performs while putting on makeup with her fake eye out, the orange coral underneath exposed. This piece is about pride and loss.
“This piece is being created on the ancestral and stolen lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee people, as well as many other nations and people who have cared for this land that we colonially know as Toronto. I have had the privilege of learning from this land and people for the past six years and know that it is my responsibility to do what I can to educate other white settlers and learn myself about the history and use our privilege to make change in this cursed country. There is an Indigenous community centre near my house where I walk and smell their fires on Thursdays and Sundays every week, and every month I make a donation so that those fires keep burning and the art that flows from that space can continue. It's not enough, but I invite other settlers to find ways to leave this land, these communities we are a part of, better than we arrived here. A significant portion of my pay for this project is donated to that community centre as well”. – Jess Watkin
