In April 2019, NAC English Theatre, in partnership with the Banff Centre and several key organizations, gathers together nine Inspirers from Canada, USA, Australia and the UK for a three-day conversation about the costs of Climate Change and how we might reimagine the footprint of Canadian theatre.
This final Cycle is co-curated by Associate Artistic Director of English Theatre Sarah Garton Stanley and playwright, translator and Artistic Director of The Arctic Cycle, Chantal Bilodeau. Cultural leaders from across Canada join the conversation.

Sarah Garton Stanley (SGS)
Sarah/SGS is VP of Programming at Arts Commons in Calgary and co-stewards historic Birchdale. Formerly the Artistic Producer for the National Creation Fund (NAC). As part of her PhD, in Cultural Studies at Queen’s, she created Massey & Me: Conversations at the End of Theatre. This five-part series formally references the CBC Massey Lectures, and it reflects critically on the genealogical, political, and administrative structures that house professional theatre in Canada.
She is co-founder of SpiderWebShow and FOLDA, the Baby Grand Theatre, was the 1st female Artistic Director at Buddies in Bad Times, and was the inaugural Artistic Associate for The Magnetic North Theatre Festival.
SGS was named a 2022 Arne Bengt Johansson Fellow at The Banff Forum and returned in 2023. She was recently appointed to the board of Alberta Theatre and the Buddies Leadership Advisory Pilot and the National Advisory for the Creation Fund.
Sarah, alias SGS, est vice-présidente de la programmation d’Arts Commons à Calgary et codirectrice du légendaire Birchdale. Elle a également été productrice artistique du Fonds national de création du CNA. Depuis peu, elle siège au conseil d’administration de l’Alberta Theatre et au Comité consultatif national du Fonds national de création du CNA, et fait partie du projet pilote de consultation en leadership du Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
Chantal Bilodeau is a playwright and translator whose work focuses on the intersection of science, policy, art, and climate change. She is the Artistic Director of The Arctic Cycle – an organization seeking to foster dialogue around our global climate crisis, create an empowering vision of the future, and encourage people to take action. She is also the founder of the online platform Artists and Climate Change and a co-founder of Climate Change Theatre Action, a worldwide series of readings and performances of climate change plays that coincide with the United Nations COP meetings. She is currently working on a series of eight plays that look at the social and environmental changes taking place in the eight Arctic states.
She is a recipient of the Woodward International Playwriting Prize as well as the First Prize in the Earth Matters on Stage Ecodrama Festival and the Uprising National Playwriting Competition. Her translations include over 20 plays by contemporary playwrights Sébastien David (Quebec), Mohamed Kacimi (Algeria), Koffi Kwahulé (Côte d’Ivoire), Catherine Léger (Quebec), Étienne Lepage (Quebec), David Paquet (Quebec), and Larry Tremblay (Quebec). Her plays have been presented in two dozen countries across the world.
Chantal Bilodeau est une dramaturge et traductrice dont le travail est axé sur le point de rencontre entre la science, les politiques, l’art, et le changement climatique.Elle est la directrice artistique de The Arctic Cycle – un organisme qui cherche à promouvoir le dialogue autour de notre crise climatique mondiale, créer une vision stimulante de l’avenir, et encourager les gens à passer à l’action. Elle est également la fondatrice de la plateforme numérique Artists and Climate Change et cofondatrice de Climate Change Theatre Action, une série internationale de mise en lectures et de représentations de pièces sur le changement climatique qui coïncident avec les conférences des Nations Unies sur le changement climatique.
