Join St. John’s musicians Jenelle Duval of the Indigenous-led ensemble Eastern Owl and Kellie Walsh of Shallaway Youth Choir and Lady Cove Women’s Choir for an in-depth conversation about the benefits of cross cultural collaborations.
Eastern Owl is a unique, award-winning group of women who blend the styles of First Nations drum music and contemporary folk to create their own innovative sound.
Shallaway and Lady Cove are both celebrated ensembles on the Canadian choral scene who combine incredible musicianship with impactful community engagement.
Jenelle Duval is an L’nu woman and currently works as an Arts and Culture Coordinator at the First Light St. John’s Friendship Centre, where she has been creating artistic spaces and opportunities for community and arts professionals since 2012. She is the Artistic Director of Spirit Song Festival, an annual celebration of Indigenous Arts and Culture in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Jenelle is a member of the programming committee for Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Fest, Newfoundland Quarterly’s Editorial Advisory Committee, the City of St. John’s Arts and Culture Advisory Committee, and the Board of Directors at Eastern Edge Gallery. She is the recipient of a YWCA Women of Distinction Award (2019) for her work in Arts and Heritage, as a founding member of EMCA-winning group Eastern Owl and a tireless advocate for the preservation and revitalization of cultural arts and music.
In 2019, Jenelle was nominated for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and in 2020 was awarded the annual Achievement Award from the Atlantic Presenters Association for her contribution to Indigenous arts presentation in Newfoundland and Labrador. Jenelle is rooted in her home territory of Ktaqmkuk, where she shares her life with her amazing daughter Kassidy.
Jenelle Duval est une femme L’nu qui occupe présentement le poste de coordonnatrice des arts et de la culture au centre d’amitié First Light de St. John’s, où elle crée des espaces et des occasions artistiques pour les professionnels communautaires et artistiques depuis 2012. Elle est la directrice artistique du festival Spirit Song, une célébration annuelle des arts et de la culture autochtones de St. John’s, à Terre-Neuve et Labrador. Jenelle est membre du comité de programmation du Folk Fest de Terre-Neuve et Labrador, du comité consultatif éditorial du Newfoundland Quarterly, du comité consultatif d’arts et culture de la Ville de St. John’s Arts, et du conseil d’administration de la galerie Eastern Edge. Elle a reçu le prix Women of Distinction du YWCA en 2019 pour son travail au niveau des arts et du patrimoine, comme fondatrice du groupe primé aux EMCA Eastern Owl, et comme championne infatigable pour la conservation et la revitalisation des arts et de la musique.
Jenelle a été finaliste comme autrice-compositrice de l’année aux Prix de musique folk canadienne en 2019, et en 2020 elle a reçu le prix annuel de Atlantic Presenters Association pour sa contribution à la diffusion d’arts autochtones à Terre-Neuve et Labrador. Jenelle est bien ancrée dans son territoire natal de Ktaqmkuk, où elle partage sa vie avec sa fille incroyable, Kassidy.
Kellie Walsh is the founder and Artistic Director of the award-winning Lady Cove Women's Choir and the Artistic Director of the internationally celebrated Shallaway Youth Choir. She has most recently co-founded the Inuit Youth Choir Ullûgiagatsuk from Nunatsiavut, Labrador, and is the immediate Past President of Canada’s national choral organization, Choral Canada. From deep and proud roots in Newfoundland and Labrador, she’s gained renown internationally for embracing the medium of choral singing as an opportunity to explore empathy building, sociocultural identity, and civic engagement. Walsh has worked across Canada, the United States, South America, Europe and Asia advocating choral music as a medium to unite people and cultures, transcend geography and societal, political and economic circumstances. Walsh believes the arts can play a transformative role in shaping communities' futures.
Kellie Walsh est la fondatrice et la directrice artistique du Lady Cove Women’s Choir, lauréat de nombreux prix, et la directrice artistique du Shallaway Youth Choir, de renommée internationale. Elle a récemment cofondé le chœur de jeunes Inuits Ullûgiagatsuk du Nunatsiavut, au Labrador, et est la présidente sortante de l’organisme choral national, Choral Canada.
