Leonard Bernstein was fascinated with the American cultural landscape and through his music he sought to bring about social change. His hope to connect all Americans is clearly illustrated in the love that blossoms amid the violent rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks of West Side Story.

Leonard Bernstein was greatly influenced by George Gershwin's ability to mix different musical forms to create a distinctly American style of music. In this episode of the NACOcast Nick Atkinson speaks with conductor Jack Everley about the music of George Gershwin.

Selections from Porgy and Bess, Fascinating Rhythm, and are featured in the episode.
