3rd Annual NAC English Theatre Family Day

NAC Lobby

Ottawa, ON – The NAC English Theatre celebrates the long weekend in February with families in mind.  Sanctuary Song, an opera for young people, opens on Saturday in the NAC Studio, and continues with performances on Monday alongside the fun-filled (and free!) 3rd Annual NAC English Theatre Family day -- for children five to 95!

Inspired by true events, Sanctuary Song tells the story of Sydney, an Asian elephant, and her remarkable 22-year friendship with her zookeeper. From decades in captivity to the freedom of a sanctuary in Tennessee, the story unravels as seen through Sydney’s eyes.

Along the journey, her memories of childhood in the jungle, circus life and her solitary days in the zoo come alive through the emotional power of opera, dance and stunning design.

“...any child you take to Sanctuary Song won't soon forget this strong production.” NOW Toronto

3rd Annual NAC English Theatre Family Day

NAC Lobby
On Monday, February 18, the public is invited to celebrate the 3rd Annual English Theatre Family Day in the NAC lobby.  This special family day event features a cornucopia of hands-on activities for children and the people who love them! Join us for a memorable day of stories, games, interactive displays, and special workshops throughout the NAC lobby.

Our themes of animals, conservation and friendship are connected to the presentation of Sanctuary Song in the Studio (at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.). Highlights include:

Elephant Teeter-Totter – Find out how many kids it takes to equal the weight of a baby elephant!

Planet Elephants – A herd of 13 concrete elephants will be on display in the NAC lobby, created by local artist Christopher Griffin. Visitors can create their own miniature clay elephants and then either add them to the sculptures or take them home.

Nature Nook – Naturalist Michael Runtz will entertain guests with fascinating facts about local wildlife. Can you correctly identify our feathered friends?

Thread the Needle – NAC English Theatre Artistic Director Jillian Keiley will lead visitors in this dancing game, reminiscent of the journey of a baby elephant holding on to the tail of its mama.

Also featured will be many Family Day favourites from past years, including button-making, face-painting, paper boats in the NAC Fountain, the Story Salon, arts and crafts, bake sale, community booths, tickle trunk, the Three-Minute Play Festival, Theatre Workshops (with Theatre Direct) and Dance Workshops (with the ever-popular Shawn Byfield). Tying it all together is the Family Day Scavenger Quiz, which leads visitors throughout the building to discover all these wonderful activities.

And all the Family Day events are free!
