The National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Ottawa Chamber Music Society, and Ensemble contemporain de Montréal (ECM+) co-present the ECM+ in Génération 2010, a concert of new works in the NAC’s Fourth Stage on Saturday November 13

In the Ottawa stop on their cross-Canada tour, Montreal’s Ensemble contemporain de Montréal (ECM+) throws a spotlight on a new generation of Canadian composers. ECM+ and the NAC invite music lovers to discover new works by four of Canada’s most brilliant up-and-coming composers. Writer/composer Nicolas Gilbert will be onstage -- with ten ECM+ musicians and Artistic Director and conductor Véronique Lacroix -- to guide the audience through four new works that are as unique as they are fascinating. Génération 2010 takes place in the NAC’s Fourth Stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday November 13. Tickets are $15 at the NAC Box Office in person or via Ticketmaster (with service charges) at 613-755-1111.

“Lacroix and her players ... are a wonderful ensemble, who played everything with a well-balanced sound and a palpable sense of adventure.”  Robert Everett-Green, The Globe and Mail

Simon Martin (Quebec), Christopher Mayo (Ontario), Cassandra Miller (British Columbia), and Gordon Williamson (Ontario) are the four composers who were chosen during the Génération 2010 competition, now one of the most popular composition competitions in the country. In February 2010, in collaboration with the musicians and Artistic Director of the ECM+, they gave a series of live public composition workshops, which provided an opportunity for all genres of musical experimentation. This Génération 2010 concert is a one-of-a-kind event for those wishing to experience the process of musical creation from inside the composer’s mind, to hear four composers, along with the conductor and host, reveal some of the secrets of their work onstage.

The program includes the premiere of four works: Musique d’art pour orchestre de chamber by Simon Martin (with the support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec), Binding the quiet by Christopher Mayo with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts), Concerto for violin and blindfolded ensemble by Cassandra Miller (with violin soloist Véronique Mathieu), and anticipation, emancipated by Gordon Williamson. From the timbral refinement of Martin to the raw emotionality of Miller, the astonishing virtuosity of Mayo to the overflowing invention of Williamson, listeners will discover there are as many different methods of composing as there are composers. The ECM + musicians are Véronique Lacroix (conductor); Marie-Hélène Breault (flute); Martin Gauvreau (clarinet); Christian Navratil (bassoon); Nadia Labelle (horn); Philip Hornsey (percussion); Pamela Reimer (piano); Tim Brady (guitar); Véronique Mathieu (violin); Marie-Ève Lessard (viola) ; and Chloé Dominguez (cello).

CAST YOUR BALLOT! Audience Choice Award
For the first time, the Generation 2010 audiences will be asked to vote for their favourite piece. The winning composer will be awarded the Generation 2010 Audience Choice Award, a $1000 prize plus a commission from Jeunesses Musicales of Canada.

Since its inception in 2000, the Génération project has presented works to the public in an inviting and stimulating manner, contributing to their understanding of and encouragement of the creative process. Over the years, the Génération pproject, which has featured dozens of the young generation’s most talented composers, has become an indispensable part of the ECM+ programs. This concert is part of the sixth cross-Canada tour by ECM+ . In addition to the Ottawa engagement, the ensemble gives concerts in Banff, Victoria, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, and St. John’s between November 5 and November 16.
