The National Arts Centre Orchestra’s fifth 2010-2011 Bostonian Bravo Series concert highlights Dvorák’s popular “From the New World” Symphony as well as the return of violin virtuoso Sarah Chang

The fifth Bostonian Bravo concert of the season – entitled Dvorák’s “New World” will be performed on Thursday January 20 and Friday January 21 at 8 p.m. in Southam Hall. These concerts feature acclaimed Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård as well as violin superstar Sarah Chang. Both Mr. Søndergård and Ms Chang will join CBC Radio’s Alan Neal for a post-concert chat onstage.

The concert features:
MENDELSSOHN          Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave)
BRUCH                        Violin Concerto No. 1
DVORÁK                     Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, “From the New World”

In his most popular symphony – and one of the most popular in the modern repertoire -- Czech composer Antonin Dvorák (1841-1904) wanted to convey “impressions and greetings from the New World”, a sort of musical postcard from America. Dvorák composed the symphony in 1893 during his 3-year visit to the United States. He was greatly interested in the Native American music and African-American spirituals he heard in America. Dvorák did not actually use any Native American melodies in “From the New World”, but his original themes developed these melodies with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.

POST-CONCERT TALKBACK
Alan Neal, host of CBC Radio 1’s All in a Day, hosts Thomas Søndergård and Sarah Chang

Born in Philadelphia to Korean parents, Sarah Chang began her violin studies at age 4 and promptly enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music. Within a year she had already performed with several orchestras, and her early auditions, at age 8, for Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti led to immediate engagements with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Sarah Chang is now recognized the world over as one of classical music's most captivating and gifted performers. One of the most remarkable prodigies of any generation, she has matured into a young artist whose musical insight, technical virtuosity, and emotional range continue to astonish. In these concerts, Ms Chang performs Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, a captivating and romantic work whose passion and bravado have made it a showcase for soloists and an audience favourite for 150 years. Ms Chang identifies it as one of her favourite pieces of music, and performs it on her 2009 EMI recording, “Bruch/Brahms: Violin Concertos”.
