February 18, 2015 – OTTAWA (Canada) – “As a performance it’s a tour de force and more than earned M’Carthy the raucous ovation it received. As a play it’s persuasive and touching.” - The Toronto Star

Imprisoned in Canada for committing a violent crime, a young man from Ghana tells his cellmates a story on the eve of his release. Although there is great risk in sharing his tale, he must tell it to be truly free.

Tawiah M’Carthy’s captivating hero is caught between worlds – gay and straight, black and white, African and North American. Through storytelling, dance, and live music, Obaaberima (“girlboy”) chronicles young Agyeman’s journey from confused childhood in Ghana to mature Canadian adulthood.

M'Carthy explores sexuality and socialization in his uniquely layered world, morphing effortlessly into the many characters he encounters. Obaaberima is a fulfilling and well-rounded emotional experience – funny, serious, sad, and extremely moving.

This powerful production became a critical and audience favourite, winning three 2013 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, including Outstanding Production.

“When the play ended, there was a unanimous and passionate standing ovation. The cast and crew of Obaaberima had better get used to that sort of exchange. It’s going to happen after every performance” – Mooney On Theatre

Joining Tawiah M’Carthy, the creative team includes: Director evalyn parry; Musician/Composer Kobèna Aquaa-Harrison; Set and Costume Designer Camellia Koo; Lighting Designer Michelle Ramsay; Stage Manager Laura Baxter.
