Velvet Wells

Velvet Wells (they/them) is a multi-award winning Black, autistic, queer, disabled professional devised theatre artist living in Ottawa.
 
Velvet is writing the first draft of “Anansi Discovers His Reflection” in 2023, and concurrently producing the musical improv show “All Request Radio” at Ottawa Fringe Festival. 
 
Velvet was given the 2023 "Emerging IBPOC Artist" award by the Ottawa Arts Council. In 2022, “(Re)Tired Magical Black Man” earned three awards: Emerging Artist (Ottawa Fringe Festival); Most Accessible Show (Halifax Fringe Festival); and National Emerging Artist (JRG Society for the Arts); the show was a five-time nominee for 2022 Prix Rideau Awards.  
 
In 2022, Velvet joined the Black Pledge Collective as an Ottawa regional delegate and facilitator. Velvet co-led multiple-day Pre-Rehearsal Orientation workshops at the Stratford Festival, alongside other Black Pledge facilitators. In 2023, Velvet joined the International Theatresports Institute as the North America East regional representative.
