Last updated: April 18, 2024

Born in Venezuela, Sofia started playing the violin at the age of 7. A year later, due to her country's political crisis, she moved to Canada and continued her musical journey at the Conservatory of Music of Montreal until she was 14, when she started dedicating herself to viola interpretation. Since then, she has studied with Jocelyne Bastien and received her bachelor’s degree at the age of 20. She is currently completing her master’s degree with her teacher at the conservatory.

Sofia has had the chance to play for numerous masters during her studies, such as Antoine Tamestit, Maxim Rysanov, Miguel da Silva, Ivo-Jan van der Werff, Isaac Chalk, Daniel Avshalomov and Edward Klorman, to name a few. She has also participated in multiple summer programs, such as the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Orchestre de la Francophonie, the Portillo International Music Festival and the Domaine Forget. These experiences have allowed her to produce herself with renowned ensembles such as the I Musici chamber orchestra as a soloist, the Metropolitan Orchestra as a pre-concert act and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as an invited student player. Devoted to her instrument, Sofia Morao seeks to promote the feeling of community and collaboration through her playing.
