Marie Chouinard

Montreal dancer and choreographer

Marie Chouinard's ‘National Moment’ came by coincidence during intermission at the NAC 25 years ago. Leaving her seat, the brilliant and provocative Montreal soloist encountered the NAC's Producer of Dance and asked him for the National Arts Centre’s support to create her own ensemble.

The answer was immediate. “He said, ‘Yes.’ That’s such a very big memory for me, it was really the beginning of this Company.” Since then, every new piece created by the internationally acclaimed Compagnie Marie Chouinard has been presented on the NAC stage. Appointed to the Order of Canada in 2007 and recipient of France’s Chevalier, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2012, Ms. Chouinard continues to create new works for her dancers. “I step into the unknown, it’s like creating a new world that only comes to life on stage.” However far her ensemble travels, Marie Chouinard always returns to the NAC. “After so many years, we feel at home there.”
