The late Malcolm Forsyth was born in South Africa and obtained his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Cape Town. He emigrated to Canada in 1968, playing trombone in the Edmonton Symphony and teaching music at the University of Alberta for 34 years.
The NAC Orchestra has performed many Forsyth compositions, including Symphony No. 2, Atayoskewin, a cello concerto called Electra Rising with the composer’s daughter Amanda Forsyth as soloist, the Double Concerto for Cello and Violin, and the NAC-commissioned A Ballad of Canada.
