On the heels of his 2013 award-winning album Valleyheart, JUNO winning singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge has decided to put together a different sort of offering for his 6th studio album: an ode to one of Canada’s most popular and enduring bands, The Tragically Hip. On the heels of his 2013 award-winning album Valleyheart, JUNO winning singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge has decided to put together a different sort of offering for his 6th studio album: an ode to one of Canada’s most popular and enduring bands, The Tragically Hip. Daredevil is less of a ‘tribute’ and more of an homage to The Tragically Hip. “I chose songs that resonated with me in my youth,” says Rutledge. “It was a little like memory lane, at times. As Canadians, I think we all share a connection to these songs—the Hip bind us together the way Gordon Lightfoot does.

Rutledge admits it was extremely difficult to whittle it down to the ten songs that make up Daredevil. “We had two days of pre-production in which we rehearsed 25 songs—it broke my heart to lose some of them.” The album was recorded at the Rogue Studios in Toronto over the course of 5 days, live off the floor, with minimal overdubs. “The Hip always have a live sound to their albums, and it was imperative that we do it their way.”
