The film
Directed and Produced by: Robert J. Flaherty

Live Performance
With: Tanya Tagaq, Jesse Zubot, Jean Martin
Soundscape by: Derek Charke

Captivating and artistically ingenious, Tanya Tagaq is a multi-award-winning music artist whose unique voice and creative imagination have led to collaborations with musicians around the world such as Björk and the Kronos Quartet. In this powerful live performance event, Tanya uses her voice and musical talents to create a mesmerizing, original soundscape during a screening of Nanook of the North. Her haunting throat singing combines with Jesse Zubot and Jean Martin’s improvisatory genius and Derek Charke’s original score to frame the film in a new, contemporary light.

One of the first great semi-fictionalized film “documentaries”, Robert Flaherty’s unforgettable portrait of the life of an Inuit family, Nanook of the North, was made in 1922 and remains possibly the most famous film ever made about Indigenous people.

Sub-titles in English and Inuktitut

Tanya Tagaq in concert with Nanook of the North was commissioned by TIFF Bell Lightbox as part of its film retrospective First Peoples Cinema: 1500 Nations, One Tradition.
