Gil Shaham

Luke Ratray

  • Mendelssohn Violin Concerto
  • Mahler Symphony No. 1

Gil Shaham, “the outstanding American violinist of his generation” (~ Time Magazine), is our soloist for Mendelssohn’s masterpiece, once called “the heart’s jewel” among violin concertos—a beautiful amalgam of romantic melodies, emotion, and virtuosity.

Then it’s Mahler’s heart-stopping tour de force, often nicknamed “Titan.” Instructing the orchestra to play the first movement “like a sound of nature,” the composer created a remarkable work—one so big, that it needs an augmented orchestra. And hang on, when seven horns—their bells turned up—proclaim the breathtaking finale!

The Friends of the NAC Orchestra is pleased to hold a spectacular silent auction in the main foyer of the NAC in conjunction with this NAC Orchestra concert. Bid on outstanding and unique donated items from across Canada and from around the world. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the NAC Orchestra’s commitment to music education programs for young people.
