Fourth Stage,1 Elgin Street,Ottawa,CanadaIn this engaging concert of Congolese rumba and Afro-jazz, the sounds and rhythms of Africa (congas, djembe, and other African percussion instruments) combine with “classical” instruments: violin, piano, guitar and bass. Jeff Kavanda grew up to that rumba sound as it streamed out every night from the bar on the corner. When he was 12, he and his friends used to get together and emulate the giants of Congolese and African music: Wendo, Franco, Sam Mangwana, Pepe Kallé, Papa Wemba… At 14, he fulfilled his childhood dream when he made his debut in General Defao’s orchestra. Jeff Kavanda takes us back to the glory days of Congolese rumba with a performance that includes classics of the genre and selections from his usual repertoire.
