Beginning with his move to Paris in 1973, Richard Galliano and his accordion began to reimagine the tradition of early 20th-century French ballroom dance music, reviving it to match the sound of contemporary times. After first playing with a wide variety of jazz names—including Chet Baker—who helped him develop his talent for improvisation, Galliano met Astor Piazzola, who inspired him to develop the musical traditions of his own country. A master of a variety of stringed instruments, guitarist Sylvain Luc began playing bass for Galliano’s trio in 1988, while also gaining experience playing with such names as Wynton Marsalis, drummer Elvin Jones, and singer Dee Dee Bridgewater. In recent years, Luc has joined Galliano in the improvisational exploration of France’s music traditions, playing French music (including a tribute to Edith Piaf) with a free and experimental jazz spirit.
