The Seasons, Mamihlapinatapai, Gnawa
“The São Paulo Companhia de Dança continues its rise up the ranks of internationally renowned dance companies … world-class artistic excellence. Composers and choreographers from around the world [now] create new, innovative works for the Company.”” Larry Ludwig, gringoes.com
São Paulo Companhia de Dança (founded 2008) has quickly become one of Brazil’s leading dance troupes, attracting remarkable young dancers and choreographers. The Seasons – a brilliant new work by Canada’s superstar choreographer Edouard Lock (La La La Human Steps) – is performed to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons reinterpreted by Gavin Bryars. These vigorous high-energy vignettes for 12 virtuoso dancers feature striking lighting and angular, repetitive movement of extreme intensity. Gnawa, by Nacho Duato, is elegant and voluptuous, an exploration of the sensuality and spirituality of the Mediterranean Sea; Spanish and North African music accompanies circular, scooping movement of luscious fluidity. Mamihlapinatapai (“a secret, shared look”) by Jomar Mesquita (Artistic Director of Brazil’s Mimulus Companhia de Dança) uses deconstructed elements of Brazilian ballroom dance and imaginative visual design to electrify the stage.
