Opera Lyra Ottawa

Opera Lyra Ottawa is thrilled to invite you to La Traviata. On March 21st & 23rd, Opera Lyra Ottawa will present this opera in concert as a part of our 2012-2013 season. Please join us as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Giuseppe Verdi with this special presentation of one of his most popular and frequently performed works, sung by principal artists of international stature, accompanied by the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Opera Lyra’s own fabulous Chorus.

Verdi’s musical masterpiece is based on Alexandre Dumas’ novel and play, La Dame aux Camélias.  It tells the bittersweet story of the doomed love affair between Violetta Valéry, a famed Parisian courtesan, and Alfredo Germont, the eldest son of a wealthy merchant family.  This touching and romantic tale is filled with some of the most popular and familiar music in the entire operatic repertoire.  The role of Violetta is a tour-de-force for a soprano and the opera is full of familiar tunes and rousing choruses.
