Four of the five Institute of Orchestral Studies (IOS) apprentices perform in a special concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday February 4, 2011 in the Fourth Stage of National Arts Centre. Performing music by Beethoven, Mozart, and Glière are apprentices Jean-Hee Lee, violin (age 26, from Ottawa), Nicholas Pappone, violin (21, Los Angeles), Clayton Leung, viola (27, Vancouver), and Viviane Gosselin, cello (25, Montreal). Michael Cox, double bass, (26, Toronto) is unable to perform in this concert. The IOS members will be joined onstage by NAC Orchestra coaches Jethro Marks (associate principal viola) and Carole Sirois (cello).

Tickets for the concert are $5 and all proceeds go to the Institute of Orchestral Studies.

The NAC Institute for Orchestral Studies is now in its fourth year. Established under the guidance of NAC Orchestra Music Director Pinchas Zukerman, the IOS is an apprenticeship program designed to prepare highly talented young musicians for successful orchestral careers, and is funded by the National Arts Centre Foundation through the National Youth and Education Trust. During selected main series weeks of the 2010-2011 season, the five apprentices rehearse and perform with the NAC Orchestra.

APPRENTICES OF THE 2010-2011 INSTITUTE FOR ORCHESTRAL STUDIES

Jean-Hee Lee, violin
Violinist Jean-Hee Lee has studied at the Glenn Gould School with Mark Fewer, the Cleveland Institute of Music with William Preucil, and with Yehonatan Berick at the University of Michigan where she received her BMus. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Thirteen Strings, at the Schleswig-Holstein, Sarasota, and Norfolk festivals, at the Banff Centre, and for CBC Radio. Awards include first place in the 2010 MTNA Chamber Music Competition (with the Sicilian Piano Trio), second place in the 2009 NTDTV International Violin Competition, and the Elaine Louise Lagerstrom Memorial Award at Minnesota’s 2009 WAMSO Young Artist Competition. Orchestral experience includes performances with Via Salzburg, Thirteen Strings, as assistant concertmaster of the Ottawa Symphony, and with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. She currently studies with Professor Jonathan Crow at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University.

Nicholas Pappone, violin
Nicholas Pappone is a student at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studies with Patinka Kopec.  Nicholas began the study of violin at age ten. As a former professional actor, Nicholas once played the role of a violin prodigy in an independent film, which inspired his interest in the instrument. Solo competition wins include the Marina del Rey-Westchester Symphony Competition, the Palisades Symphony’s Young Artist Award, and the 2004 Redlands Bowl Young Artists Competition.  He was awarded scholarships by the Leni Fe Bland Foundation, and the Westside Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.  Recently, Nicholas has attended the Young Artists Progamme of the National Arts Centre, and performed chamber music at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival of the Yale School of Music studying with the Tokyo String Quartet.  In New York, Nicholas has a first violin position as the youngest member of the Chamber Orchestra of New York, and he coaches chamber music with members of the American String Quartet and Lawrence Dutton of the Emerson String Quartet at the Manhattan School of Music.

Clayton Leung
Clayton Leung is a professional studies viola student at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the direction of Robert Vernon. Leung, formerly a violinist, studied at the University of Victoria with Sharon Stanis and has performed with the Victoria Symphony and collaborated with musicians in the Vancouver and Victoria symphonies, members of the Lafayette quartet and performed in movies and for Royalty. As a violist, he has studied with viola pedagogues Korey Konkol and Heidi Castleman and has been coached by Itzak Perlman, Donald Weilerstein and the Cavani, Cleveland, Juilliard, Takacs, Tokyo and St. Lawrence quartets. He has spent past summers at the Perlman Music Program chamber music workshop, National Repertory orchestra, Spoleto Festival USA, Orford Arts Centre quartet seminar and the Banff Arts Centre chamber music residency. Through the Cleveland Institute of Music, Leung coaches students in the preparatory department, works in the distant learning program and performs as part of community service program to all ages in the Cleveland area. He is a recipient of the British Columbia Arts Council Scholarship and Galaxie Rising Stars Program of CBC.

Viviane Gosselin
Born in Saint-Hyacinthe, Viviane Gosselin began studying the cello at the age of five.  She enrolled at le Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in 1997 in the class of Denis Brott, and later studied with Carole Sirois. From 1998 to 2003, Viviane was Principal Cellist of the Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de la Montérégie. Competition prizes include the Montérégie in 2001, and Verdun in 2003. In 2006, Viviane was a member of National Youth Orchestra of Canada and also performed in the Toronto Summer Music Academy’s production of Don Giovanni. Masterclass performances include  Jean-Queyras Guihen, Elizabeth Dolin and pianist Paul Stewart. In 2009, Viviane won the concerto competition at the Conservatoire de Montréal, performing Haydn's Concerto in D Major. This past summer she toured Quebec and Ontario as a member of l’Orchestre de la francophonie.

Michael Cox
Michael Cox began studies of the double bass at the age of nineteen under the tutelage of his father, and later with Victoria Symphony principal bassist Mary Rannie. Michael earned a Bachelors of Music, with Distinction in Double Bass Performance from the University of Victoria in 2008. He also studied with double bass pedagogue Gary Karr, and held the position of Principal Bass of the University of Victoria Symphony Orchestra. Michael is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Performance at the University of Ottawa with NAC Orchestra Principal Bass Joel Quarrington. Michael is a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and has also performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the 2009 Boris Brott Festival Orchestra, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra, the Greater Victoria Chamber Orchestra, and the 2006 Toronto Summer Music Academy and Festival Opera Orchestra. He has also toured Canada and the United States as Principal Bass of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and the Yukon with the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra.
