Originally created by and for Mélanie Demers at the invitation of the B-Motion festival in Bassano, Italy, the performance piece Icône Pop has been transformed into the film MAMA, directed by Xavier Curnillon. Transposed onto the bodies of Marc Boivin, Stacey Désilier and Chi Long, the theatrical work dissolves onscreen into an impressionistic interplay between religious and pop iconography, the sacred and the profane. The auras of the Virgin Mary and Beyoncé converge in a modest striptease where the archetypes of the whore, the saint and the mother compete, until finally the eternal figure of the child emerges.
