Audition Requirements for 2019

Applicants must submit YouTube video auditions of the required repertoire including accompaniment as listed below. Each movement or excerpt MUST be recorded in a separate video file.

Violin

accompaniment optional 

  • First movement of a standard classical, romantic or contemporary concerto
  • One virtuoso piece
  • First movement of a Bach sonata or a fugue

Viola

accompaniment optional 

  • First movement of a Bloch suite, Bartók, Walton, Hindemith, Hoffmeister OR Stamitz concerto OR a movement of a Schubert, Brahms or Hindemith sonata
  • A movement of a Bach cello suite

Cello

  • One prelude and one contrasting movement from any Bach Suite Nos 1-6
  • One movement of a classical, romantic or contemporary concerto 

Double Bass

  • A solo of any sort for up to 5 minutes
  • Four (4) contrasting excerpts of standard repertoire: no repeats

Flute

  • Mozart G+ or D+ Flute Concerto, First Movement
  • One movement of a contrasting piece
  • Three (3) orchestral excerpts:
    • Bach: “Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben” from St. Matthew Passion, bars 1-18
    • Beethoven: Symphony No. 3, Movement 4, bars 171-200
    • Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Scherzo, from 12 bars before P to the end

Oboe

  • Mozart Concerto, C+ 1st movement, no cadenza
  • Two contrasting movements from any standard Oboe sonata
  • Three (3) orchestral excerpts:
    • Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin, I (Prelude):
      • Beginning to rehearsal 2;
      • Five (5) bars after rehearsal 8 to rehearsal 9 (1st oboe line only)
    • Rossini, Overture to La Scala di Seta, opening solo and Allegro solo
    • Brahms Violin concerto, 2nd movement solo

Clarinet

  • Mozart Concerto, 1st movement, exposition
  • Debussy Premiere Rhapsody, #9 to end
  • Three (3) orchestral excerpts:
    • Beethoven Symphony #6, 1st movement, measures 477-492
    • Stravinsky Firebird Suite 1919, Variation de l’Oiseau de feu
    • Kodály Dances of Galanta, measures 31-65

Bassoon

  • Mozart Concerto K191 1st movement
  • Milde Concert Etudes from Book 1 or 2 - one slow, one fast
  • Three (3) orchestral excerpts:
    • Marriage of Figaro, Overture
    • Tchaikovsky 4th symphony, 2nd movement
    • Shostakovich 9th Symphony, 4th and 5th movements

Horn

  • First movement of any Mozart horn concerto
  • One short contemporary work or movement , solo or accompanied
  • Three (3) orchestral excerpts:
    • Beethoven’s Symphony #6, third movement solo
    • Brahms’ Symphony #3, third movement solo
    • Ravel’s Pavane, opening solo

Piano

  • One movement from a classical sonata;
  • One étude from the romantic period e.g. Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninoff OR a large scale work from the romantic period.

Voice S/A/T/B

  • Two contrasting selections from standard classical repertory of lieder, art songs or oratorio
  • One operatic aria
  • Include at least two languages:
    • One work must be sung in English or French.
    • Other selections may be sung in English, French, Italian or German
