NAC Dance Student Matinees

Welcome teachers and students! Welcome to those who are devotees and those who are new to the art form.

Each season, we are thrilled to offer an open dress rehearsal of the holiday favourite The Nutcracker  especially for a student audience. This year, The Nutcracker is performed by Alberta Ballet and—as always—accompanied by the wonderful National Arts Centre Orchestra! The dress rehearsal is open to all ages. And then, in May, Montreal’s Le Patin Libre, whose members are all highly trained skaters, have been causing a sensation in Canada and abroad with their revolutionary revision of what an ice show can be. Open to students in Grade 5 and higher.

Experience the richness of Life in Motion. A world of Dance in Ottawa.

Featuring the NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE ORCHESTRA

    Choreography by EDMUND STRIPE

As the lights dim and the familiar strains of Tchaikovsky’s enchanting music float up from the orchestra, you smile and remember why the holidays just wouldn’t be the holidays without The Nutcracker. Find yourself transported to a dazzling fairytale world where Klara and her beloved Nutcracker battle the Rat King, and where a sleigh ride through a land of glistening snowflakes leads to the realm of the benevolent Sugar Plum Fairy. This sumptuous Alberta Ballet production pulls out all the stops with fantastic costumes, extravagant sets and the charming, original choreography of Edmund Stripe.

Please note: This is a dress rehearsal.
Stops and starts may occur during the show.

Montreal’s Le Patin Libre, whose members are all highly trained skaters, have been causing a sensation in Canada and abroad with their revolutionary revision of what an ice show can be. After their 2015 Ottawa debut, the same artistic team – Pascale Jodoin, Jasmin Boivin, Taylor Dilley, Samory Ba and Alexandre Hamel, joined by dramaturg Ruth Little – return with their latest creation Threshold. The troupe has created a new kind of ice dancing far beyond the confines of traditional figure skating. An exciting new perspective for lovers of dance and skating alike. Bring your sweater! Seating is located on the ice.
