In an isolated Chinese province, the gods take shelter at the home of the prostitute Shen Te. They reward her generosity by giving her enough money to open her own tobacco shop, but the young woman soon falls prey to others’ greed and dishonesty. To ward off disaster and reclaim her authority, she disguises herself as a man.
