  President and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Deacon

  Christopher Deacon was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada’s National Arts Centre in June 2018. Throughout his career, he has been a champion of the arts in Canada who believes in supporting ambitious new creation and propelling Canadian artists on the world stage. He is also a strong proponent of making performing arts centres more open, accessible, and engaged with their communities. His first year as President and CEO celebrated the 50th anniversary season of the NAC with a number of special initiatives, including a European Tour by the NAC Orchestra, and an open house that welcomed thousands of Canadians to backstage tours and performances. 

  Since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in March 2020, Christopher Deacon has guided the organization through a challenging financial situation, and focused on  leading and supporting the renewal of the Canadian performing arts sector – the vision of the NAC’s three-year Strategic Plan, The Next Act. Under his leadership, the NAC artistic team has created many new digital initiatives in support of that vision, most notably #CanadaPerforms, which provided financial support (from privately raised funds) to 700 Canadian artists from across the country for their online performances. The two-year partnership now supports livestreamed performances at the NAC and in venues nationwide. The NAC has also spearheaded research about Canadians’ attitudes toward returning to live arts and culture, and has published national re-opening guidelines for performing arts organizations and venues.

  Christopher Deacon has prioritized diversity, equity and inclusion at the National Arts Centre. His tenure included the landmark launch of Indigenous Theatre and its highly successful first season in 2019-2020. More recently, he enabled NAC artistic leaders to bring forward initiatives such as the naming of Montreal’s Black Theatre Workshop as Co-Curating Company of NAC English Theatre; the programming of an increasing number of IBPoC artists and companies; the hiring of a Director of Equity and Inclusion; and anti-racism training at the Board, Senior Management and staff levels of the organization.

  During his 22 years as Managing Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Christopher Deacon was the driving force behind numerous ambitious initiatives. He led the Orchestra to tour nationally and internationally, including the seven-city China Tour in 2013 that included eight concerts and 80 education events, as well as the 2014 UK Tour, the largest Canadian initiative overseas to mark the centenary of Canada’s entry into the First World War. He spearheaded Life Reflected, a multidisciplinary, critically acclaimed NAC commission that the Orchestra performed across Canada, and in Europe in 2019.  He also led the Committee overseeing the NAC’s recent Architectural Rejuvenation and Production Renewal Projects.

  Christopher Deacon trained as a composer, studying piano, harmony and solfège at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec in Hull. He later received a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Toronto. He lives in Ottawa with his wife Gwen Goodier. They have a daughter, Charlotte, and he is stepfather to Katherine and Peter.

  Christopher Deacon occupe le poste de président et chef de la direction du Centre national des Arts (CNA) du Canada depuis juin 2018. Au fil de sa carrière, il s’est fait champion des arts au Canada, et s’attache tout particulièrement à appuyer les nouvelles créations ambitieuses et à faire rayonner les artistes d’ici sur la scène mondiale. Il privilégie dans son approche les centres des arts de la scène invitants et accessibles, et des liens forts avec les communautés. Sa première année à la tête du CNA coïncidait avec le cinquantenaire de l’organisation, qui a notamment été souligné par une tournée européenne de l’Orchestre du CNA et une journée porte ouverte avec prestations et coup d’œil derrière le rideau pour des milliers de personnes.

  Depuis que l’état de pandémie a été déclaré, en mars 2020, Christopher Deacon a aidé le CNA à naviguer une situation financière précaire et à réorienter ses efforts sur la relance du secteur canadien des arts de la scène – la clé du plan stratégique triennal Le prochain acte du CNA. Sous sa direction, l’équipe artistique du Centre a lancé plusieurs initiatives numériques qui sont venues appuyer cette vision. Central parmi elles, #CanadaEnPrestation a permis d’offrir des cachets en fonds privés à quelque 700 artistes d’un bout à l’autre du pays pour la diffusion de prestations en ligne. Le projet, fruit d’un partenariat s’échelonnant sur deux ans, soutient aujourd’hui la diffusion en direct de spectacles au CNA et sur les scènes d’un océan à l’autre. En outre, le Centre a piloté un projet de recherche pour prendre le pouls de la population canadienne en ce qui concerne le retour dans les salles de spectacle, et a publié des lignes directrices nationales pour la réouverture d’organisations et de centres des arts de la scène.

  Christopher Deacon a par ailleurs fait de la diversité, de l’équité et de l’inclusion une priorité pour le CNA. C’est notamment au cours de son mandat qu’a été inauguré l’historique Théâtre autochtone et sa très populaire première saison en 2019–2020. Plus récemment, il a épaulé la direction artistique de l’organisation dans la mise en œuvre de projets comme la gouverne partagée de la programmation du Théâtre anglais avec le Black Theatre Workshop de Montréal; la mise en vedette d’un plus grand nombre de talents autochtones, noirs et de couleur; l’embauche d’une directrice de l’équité, la diversité et l’inclusion; et une formation antiracisme à l’intention du CA, de la haute direction et du personnel.

  Christopher Deacon a également mené à bien plusieurs projets d’envergure au cours de ses 22 ans à titre de directeur administratif de l’Orchestre du CNA. Il a notamment piloté pour l’ensemble des tournées nationales et internationales, dont une en Chine (2013), qui comportait 8 concerts et 80 activités éducatives dans 7 villes, ainsi qu’une au R.-U. (2014) – la plus importante initiative canadienne outre-mer soulignant le centenaire du déclenchement de la Première Guerre mondiale. Il a également été le fer de lance de la commande multidisciplinaire Réflexions sur la vie, qui a été saluée par la critique et interprétée par l’Orchestre aux quatre coins du pays, de même qu’en Europe, en 2019. En outre, il a présidé le comité responsable des projets de renouvellement architectural et de mise à niveau des équipements de production du CNA.

  Christopher Deacon a étudié la composition, le piano, l’harmonie et le solfège au Conservatoire de musique du Québec, à Hull, et a plus tard obtenu un baccalauréat en composition de l’Université de Toronto.

  Il habite à Ottawa avec son épouse, Gwen Goodier. Il est le père de Charlotte, née en 1997, et le beau-père de Katherine et Peter.

  Chair, Board Of Trustees Guy Pratte, C.M.

  Guy Pratte was appointed to the NAC Board of Trustees in January 2023. 

  An award-winning and highly sought-after lawyer, Guy Pratte has experience in complex commercial litigation (including class actions), administrative law and constitutional law cases.

  Guy is one of the most frequent advocates to appear before the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC), pleading in French or English, in cases involving either common law or Québec civil law. He also pleads before the Superior and Appeal Courts of Ontario and Québec, the Federal Court (FC) and Federal Court of Appeal (FCA).

  Guy Pratte was named to the Order of Canada in 2022 in recognition of his contributions as a lawyer, notably to pro bono work, and for his volunteer commitments to the performing arts. He was the National Arts Centre Foundation’s first Chair of the NAC Foundation and a member of the Stratford Festival Board of Governors for several years. He was the first president of Pro Bono Québec and subsequently Chair of Pro Bono Ontario. 

  Guy Pratte a été nominée au conseil d’administration du CNA en janvier 2023. 

  Avocat primé et très recherché, Guy Pratte possède une expertise en litiges commerciaux complexes (y compris en recours collectifs), droit administratif et loi constitutionnelle. 

  Il est parmi les avocats qui interviennent le plus souvent devant la Cour suprême du Canada, à la fois en français et en anglais, dans des dossiers touchant tant la common law que le droit civil du Québec. Il a aussi plaidé devant les cours supérieures et d’appel de l’Ontario et du Québec, la Cour fédérale et la Cour d’appel fédérale. 

  Guy Pratte a été décoré de l’Ordre du Canada en 2022 en reconnaissance de sa contribution comme avocat, notamment son travail bénévole et ses engagements dans le secteur des arts de la scène. Il a été le tout premier président du CA de la Fondation du CNA, ainsi que membre du CA du Festival de Stratford pendant plusieurs années. Il a aussi été président-fondateur de Pro Bono Québec, et a ensuite été nommé président du CA de Pro Bono Ontario.
