  Choreographer Gregory Maqoma

  Born in Soweto in 1973, Greg became interested in dance in the late 1980s as a means to escape the political tensions growing in his place of birth. He started his formal dance training in 1990 at Moving into Dance wherein in 2002 he became the Associate Artistic Director. Maqoma has established himself as an internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, teacher, director and scriptwriter. He founded Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) in 1999 when he was undertaking a scholarship at the Performing Arts Research and Training School (PARTS) in Belgium under the direction of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

  Maqoma is respected for his collaborations with artists of his generation. Since 2000 he has collaborated with choreographers including Akram Khan, Vincent Mantsoe, Faustin Linyekula, Dada Masilo, Shanell Winlock and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

  Several works in his VDT repertoire have won him accolades and international acclaim. They include FNB Vita Choreographer of the Year in 1999, 2001 and 2002 for Rhythm 1.2.3, Rhythm Blues and Southern Comfort respectively. He received the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance in 2002. Maqoma was a finalist in the Daimler Chrysler Choreography Award in 2002 and the Rolex Mentorship Programme in 2003. He is the recipient of the 2012 Tunkie Award for Leadership in Dance, which is presented annually to a South African who has elevated the standard and visibility of dance in South Africa.

  In 2017 the French Government awarded Maqoma the honorific Chevalier de L’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

  Né à Soweto en 1973, Gregory Maqoma s’intéresse à la danse à la fin des années 1980 pour échapper aux tensions politiques croissantes dans son pays natal. Il entame sa formation de danseur en 1990 auprès de la compagnie Moving into Dance, dont il deviendra directeur artistique associé en 2002. Il fait sa marque comme danseur, chorégraphe, professeur, metteur en scène et scénariste de renommée mondiale. En 1999, il fonde le Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) et entreprend, en parallèle, une formation comme boursier à la Performing Arts Research and Training School (PARTS), en Belgique, sous la houlette d’Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

  M. Maqoma jouit d’une solide réputation pour ses collaborations avec des artistes de sa génération. Depuis 2000, il a collaboré avec des chorégraphes d’exception comme Akram Khan, Vincent Mantsoe, Faustin Linyekula, Dada Masilo, Shanell Winlock et Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

  Plusieurs œuvres de son répertoire pour le VDT lui ont attiré des récompenses et une reconnaissance internationale. Il a notamment remporté le prix FNB Vita du chorégraphe de l’année en 1999, 2001 et 2002, respectivement pour Rhythm 1.2.3, Rhythm Blues et Southern Comfort. Il a reçu le prix « jeune artiste » pour la danse de la Standard Bank en 2002. Il a aussi été finaliste pour le prix de chorégraphie Daimler Chrysler en 2002 et pour le programme de mentorat Rolex en 2003. Il est le lauréat du prix Tunkie pour le leadership en danse 2012, décerné chaque année à un·e artiste d’Afrique du Sud qui a élevé le niveau et la visibilité de la danse dans son pays.

  En 2017, le gouvernement français lui a décerné le titre honorifique de chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

  Company Via Katlehong Dance

  Founded in 1992, the Company takes its name from the township of Katlehong in the East Rand (Johannesburg), one of the deprived neighborhoods where the protestant Pantsula culture was born. The Company has received several international awards. In all its shows, the company Via Katlehong Dance defends the Pantsula culture from which it comes.

  In the 1960s and 1970s, under the apartheid regime in South Africa, Black rural populations were displaced to the big cities and regrouped in the townships. It is in these ghettos, where unemployment and crime reign, that the Pantsula culture with which all the youth of the townships identify would be born. Like hip hop in the United States and Europe, Pantsula culture is a lifestyle, covering fashion, music, dance, gestural codes and speaking.

  And like hip hop, it finds its field of expression in the streets. In the 1990s, as a multi-racial South Africa slowly set in, Via Katlehong Dance continues the protest, fighting for young people in poor neighborhoods through its shows and performances that combine Pantsula dance, tap dance, step and gumboot, a miners' dance based on handstrokes on the thighs and calves. These dances are performed together in a common energy and rhythm.

  Fondée en 1992, la compagnie tire son nom du township de Katlehong dans l’East Rand (Johannesburg), un de ces quartiers défavorisés où est née la culture contestataire Pantsula. La compagnie a reçu plusieurs prix internationaux. Dans tous ses spectacles, la compagnie Via Katlehong Dance défend la culture Pantsula dont elle est issue.

  Dans les années 60 et 70, sous le régime de l’apartheid en Afrique du Sud, les populations rurales noires ont été déplacées vers les grandes villes et regroupées dans les townships. C’est dans ces ghettos, où règnent chômage et criminalité, que naîtrait la culture Pantsula à laquelle s’identifie la jeunesse des townships. Comme le hip hop aux États-Unis et en Europe, la culture Pantsula est un style de vie, recouvrant mode, musique, danse, codes gestuels et language.

  Et comme le hip hop, elle trouve son terrain d’expression dans la rue. Dans les années 90, alors qu’une Afrique du Sud multiraciale se met lentement en place, la compagnie Via Katlehong Dance poursuit la contestation, se battant pour les jeunes des quartiers défavorisés à travers ses spectacles et performances qui combinent la danse Pantsula, les claquettes, le step et le gumboot, une danse de mineurs basée sur des coups de mains sur les cuisses et les mollets. Ces danses sont exécutées ensemble dans une énergie et un rythme communs.
