  Named one of 2020’s “Rising Stars” by BBC Music Magazine, flutist Lara Deutsch is a versatile soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player known for her engaging warmth and ability to connect with audiences. Recipient of the $125,000 Prix Goyer for 2019-2020, Lara was also a first prize winner of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal’s 2014 Manulife Competition, at which she was awarded a total of seven prizes. Additionally, she was the Grand Prize Winner of both the National Arts Centre Orchestra Bursary Competition (2014) and the Canadian Music Competition (2010), as well as a laureate of the Concours Prix d’Europe (2016).

  An avid chamber musician, Lara’s recent performance highlights include recitals for the New Classical FM’s Zoomer Hall series, the National Arts Centre (NAC) & Facebook’s #CanadaPerforms initiative, Newport Classical (Rhode Island, USA), the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal’s Virée Classique, Ottawa’s Music & Beyond Festival, and the Allegra Chamber Music series, of which she was Artist-in-Residence for the 2019-2020 season. Among her favourite collaborators are pianists Philip Chiu and Frédéric Lacroix, guitarist Adam Cicchillitti, and harpist Emily Belvedere, with whom she founded Duo Kalysta. She has recorded two chamber music albums on the Leaf Music Label: Origins (2019, Duo Kalysta) and Night Light (2022, with Philip Chiu), both of which were named to Top 20 lists for their respective years by CBC Music.

  Lara is currently based in the Ottawa-Montreal area, where she has performed extensively with the NAC Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, she has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (of which she acted as Assistant Principal Flute & Piccolo for the 2016-17 season), the symphony orchestras of Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Kingston, and the McGill Symphony Orchestra, among others.

  Whenever possible, Lara enjoys performing for young audiences through educational outreach concerts, principally as a member of the NAC’s Ayorama Wind Quintet. She is similarly dedicated to sharing her transformative experiences working with Olympic mental performance coach Jean-François Ménard, having hosted workshops internationally for performers of all ages. In November of 2020, she joined the music faculty at Carleton University as a performance instructor.

  Lara performs on a 14k gold Haynes flute, generously loaned by Canimex Inc. of Drummondville, Québec.

  She is incredibly grateful for the support of Mécénat Musica, the Canada Council for the Arts, and FACTOR in her ongoing projects, as well as for the years of invaluable guidance from her principal teachers and mentors: Denis Bluteau, Tim Hutchins, Camille Churchfield, and Cathy Baerg.   Nommée une « Rising Star » par le BBC Music Magazine en 2020, la flûtiste Lara Deutsch est autant à l’aise en solo qu’en formation de chambre et en orchestre. Elle est réputée pour son charme et sa convivialité sur scène ainsi que sa facilité à toucher le public. Lauréate du Prix Goyer 2019-2020 (125,000$), elle a également remporté sept prix au Concours Manuvie de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) en 2014, y compris le premier prix dans sa catégorie. De plus, elle a été lauréate du Concours Prix d’Europe en 2016 et a remporté les Grand Prix au Concours de la Bourse de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts (CNA) en 2014 et au Concours de musique du Canada en 2010. ‘Comme chambriste, Lara compte parmi ses projets récents des récitals en lien avec l’initiative #CanadaEnPrestation du Centre national des arts et de Facebook, dans la série “Zoomer Hall” du New Classical FM, au Festival Newport Classical aux États-Unis, à la Virée classique de l’OSM, au festival Musique et Autres Mondes à Ottawa ainsi que des prestations dans la série de musique de chambre Allegra en tant qu’artiste en résidence pour la saison 2019-2020. Elle collabore régulièrement avec les pianistes Philip Chiu et Frédéric Lacroix, le guitariste Adam Cicchillitti, et la harpiste Emily Belvedere, avec qui elle a fondé le Duo Kalysta. En novembre 2020, elle s'est jointe à la faculté de musique à l’Université Carleton en tant qu’enseignante en interprétation.

  Lara Deutsch joue sur une flûte en or 14 carats fabriquée par Haynes, gracieusement prêtée par Canimex Inc. de Drummondville, Québec.

  Shang-Jung (Kitty) Chan, recipient of the 2018 British Columbia Arts Council Scholarship, is ARCT certified from the Royal Conservatory of Music for both cello and piano with first-class honors. She appeared at various summer programs including the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Scotia Festival of Music and Le Domaine Forget Strings Academy. Kitty was a participant in the Institute of Orchestral Studies with the NAC Orchestra in partnership with University of Ottawa, as well as a student mentee in the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. She participated in public masterclass with Mischa Maisky, Paul Watkins, Laurence Lesser, Marc Coppey, Steven Doane, and Philippe Muller to name a few. Holding two Bachelor’s Degrees in Biology and Music, Kitty is currently working towards her Master’s Degree in Performance with Professor Paul Marleyn at University of Ottawa.

  Shang-Jung (Kitty) Chan, lauréate de la bourse 2018 du Conseil des arts de la Colombie-Britannique, a obtenu sa certification ARCT avec très grande distinction pour violoncelle et pour piano du Royal Conservatory of Music. Elle a participé à plusieurs programmes d’été, dont l’Orchestre national des jeunes du Canada, le Festival de musique Scotia et l’Académie des cordes du Domaine Forget. Kitty a également été participante à l’Institut de musique orchestrale de l’Orchestre du CNA, en partenariat avec l’Université d’Ottawa, et protégée étudiante au sein de l’Orchestre symphonique d’Ottawa. Elle a pris part à des classes de maître publiques avec Mischa Maisky, Paul Watkins, Laurence Lesser, Marc Coppey, Steven Doane, et Philippe Muller, pour ne nommer que ceux-là. Détentrice de deux baccalauréats en biologie et en musique, Kitty termine maintenant sa maîtrise en Interprétation à l’Université d’Ottawa sous la direction du professeur Paul Marleyn.
