L’Opéra de quat'sous

Angelo Barsetti

The 20th Century most subversive musical, transplanted to Montreal in 1939!

Soho, the London haunt of beggars, thieves and prostitutes. Two “businessmen” are locked in a struggle for power and control: Jonathan Peachum, the king of the beggars, and Macheath, known as Mack the Knife, a dangerous criminal and shameless playboy. Macheath seduces and abducts Peachum’s daughter Polly and marries her in a quickie basement ceremony. When Peachum learns of the nuptials, he vows revenge on Macheath and his gang.

This tale may seem hard to believe,
For it flies in the face of everything we are taught.
Even so, it’s no shaggy dog story,
For it clearly shows
That goodness and virtue don’t always go hand in hand with greatness and glory
