The Sibelius Academy

The Sibelius Academy is the cornerstone of the Finnish music culture through its expertise in teaching, research and artistic activities. Since 2013, the Sibelius Academy has formed a part of Uniarts Helsinki. It is an internationally recognised centre of learning, a creative community of about 1,500 students and 500 teachers and one of the largest music academies in Europe. The international nature of the academy is reflected in everything we do, from research and teaching to concerts and other activities.

The Sibelius Academy jazz department gives the highest education in jazz in Finland. With its approximately 40 students the department is a small and very high-level community of young like-minded jazz talents. We are proud of our community and it is a key element in inspiring and nurturing the growth as an artist. We are known worldwide for our high-quality teaching, comprehensive curriculum and the abundant master class activity which also includes possibilities to play and work with the top-notch international jazz musicians. Sibelius Academy offers also doctoral studies. After graduating with a master’s degree, you will have the option to apply for doctoral studies in jazz and specialize in research-oriented, artistic, or applied doctoral studies.

In addition to the studies the jazz department organizes concerts, the yearly festival DIG. and work closely in cooperation with other jazz organizations in Helsinki and in Finland. We are an active operator in the Finnish culture scene as well as a part of the international jazz society. The fall 2023 we will celebrate 40th anniversary of jazz tuition in Sibelius Academy.

A Message From Faculty Member Jussi Kannaste

Sibelius Academy  have been working with this ensemble since January 2021, and from the first rehearsal it was clear that all of the students have a great attitude and passion towards this music. The rehearsals have been very productive and fun, and it was a nice challenge having to come up with a set of music on fairly short notice. We’ve decided to play two classic jazz originals; Hank Mobley’s A Pec A Sec. (originally from Freddie Hubbard’s Goin’ Up) and Hubbard’s composition Latina (from his record High Blues Pressure), in addition to three originals by the members of the ensemble.

We look forward to playing for you and hearing all the other groups as well!

Join us in these casual jazz encounters where three schools collide and learn from each other. Audience participation is encouraged! Ask your questions in the chat during the live session. Pre-registration for this event is required.

On March 27, the three 30-minute concerts will be featured as a 90-minute concert, presented by the NAC and live streamed from our website.
