In this workshop, you will learn to make a hoop using simple materials, then Allex Wells (Sisqua7) will teach traditional hoop dance steps using single hoop. Allex will be back to teach some of our Powwow workouts this year, where you will be invited to use your hoop again!

Alex Wells is an internationally award-winning Hoop Dance Champion from Mount Currie, British Columbia. Alex is a member of the St'át'imc Lil’Wat tribe, and was brought up through cultural ceremonies, including Hoop dance, which is a healing Medicine Dance, also known as a “Creation of Life dance”.

You will need to get these simple materials in advance of the workshop, to build your hoop. You can find these items at your local hardware store:

  • White plumbing tubing - ½ “ diameter 
    • Length to get:
      • people who under 5’9” get 8' foot long
      • people who are 5’9” and up get a 9' feet long
  • A package of pre-cut wooden dowels: 
    • ½ “ in diameter and  2" in length
  • White craft glue   
  • Electrical tape 
    • to decorate the hoop with (white or any colour)
  • Pliers

This workshop is open to all people - Indigenous and non-Indigenous.
