A deft adaptation of the famous novel of the same name by Agota Kristof, Le grand cahier is the story of twins abandoned at their grandmother’s in the countryside by their mother, who seeks to spare them from the devastation of war. When it is not their elderly, sour-tempered and brutal grandmother who does so, the twins Klaus and Lukas take charge of their education, forbidding any sensitive feelings and noting their progress in a big notebook in cold, subjective fashion, without developing any moral standards, the focus being to harden body and spirit.

Catherine Vidal stages a parallel narrative of theatre and childhood. The devices are simple, with a few props placed onstage as though by the protagonists themselves. In that sense, the unique and resourceful inventiveness of the twins reflects that of the director, and all aspects of the piece are imbued with creativity.
