Singer-songwriter Nick Sherman’s rich, gentle voice rings with honesty atop strong, simple guitar. It was here in the depths of the Northern Ontario forest that his family played guitar, and Nick found himself soaking in songs and lyrics. Singer-songwriter Nick Sherman’s rich, gentle voice rings with honesty atop strong, simple guitar. He spent much of his youth out on the land, moving between his hometown, the small First Nation community of Weagamow Lake, and his family’s trapline on North Caribou Lake. It was here in the depths of the Northern Ontario forest that his family played guitar, and Nick found himself soaking in songs and lyrics.
Nick is inspired not only by those memories, timeless hymns of celebration and lamentation on the reserve, but also by great songwriters like William Elliott Whitmore, Ray LaMontagne, and Elvis Costello. His Indigenous heritage resonates as he sings his own boreal forest blues.
This concert is part of Canada Scene’s free Scene@6 series. Running every evening at 18:00 from July 2 to 23, the series showcases this country’s top folk, roots, world, and jazz artists in the NAC’s new Atrium.
