Performing selected excerpts from Silk Road Melody, Ottawa dancer, choreographer, and Dora Award-winner Deepti Gupta brings to life Sufi parables and stories in an exquisite 40-minute performance of Kathak dance featuring tales and poetry from Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. The work celebrates the philosophy of universal love that was spread along the Silk Route by wandering Sufi mystics whose culture influenced artistic practice in many countries along the route. Gupta’s interactive performance includes audience instruction in the storytelling gestures and rhythmic structures known as taal.
Artistic Director of Arzoo Dance Theatre, Gupta has trained under the guidance of Kathak legend Pundit Birju Maharaj. Her Silk Road Melody also features tabla artist Kiran Morarji performing the stunning rhythmic repertoire of Kathak, and vocal and keyboard accompaniment by Said Mushfiq Hashimi, composer and master of Indian classical music.
