ODE TO THE ATTEMPT, THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER
“[THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER] Jan Martens conjures a mesmerising choreography of nothing but jumping, strength, and geometry.”” De Volkskrant (The Peoples’ Paper / Le journal du peuple »), Amsterdam
Übertalented Belgian choreographer Jan Martens combines theatre, dance, and pop culture in workouts for the mind, dressed in cheeky humour. His work is provocative, highly physical, and enormously enjoyable. ODE TO THE ATTEMPT is a funny, quirky solo deconstructing the creative process, all lunges and wind-milling arms, bouncing in place with shorts up then shorts down. THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER is dance as a killer workout – literally breathtaking – featuring eight “runners” jiggling, hopping, and leaping in unison. Variations abound, lights and music come and go, and the dancers bounce without pause for 70 extreme minutes. Haunting and evocative, such powerful repetition subtly morphs from “sameness” to a rich variety of altered ideas and feelings.
