Message from the artistic director

Welcome to the 2012-13 season of English Theatre at Canada’s National Arts Centre – a history-making season for our company! Not only is our playbill theatrical, important, and soulful, but, for the first time in our 43 years, all the plays are created by women.

When I arrived at the NAC in 2005, about 59% of the country’s theatre-going audience was female, but only 27% of the plays produced in Canada were written by female playwrights. Seven years later, these statistics have not changed. And so, in the spirit of “firsts” and of leading the way for change, we have dedicated ourselves to correcting this inequity. After all, isn’t Justice herself depicted as a woman?

Here are plays for everyone... about miners and doctors, goddesses and men, heroes and “she-roes”, renegades and girls – stories of private struggle and social justice, comedies, musicals, and dramas, all deserving a place on our national stage. And all guaranteed to amaze, inspire, and entertain you.
