Last updated: October 17, 2017

French and Portuguese roots, studies in psychology, philosophy and theatre … In the French cultural landscape, Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota is like a river fed by multiple tributaries. He launched his directing career in 1992, and was appointed artistic director, first of the Comédie de Reims (in 2002), then of the prestigious Théâtre de la Ville de Paris (in 2008). Since 2011 he has also headed the Festival d’Automne in Paris. Passionate about 20th‑century theatre, he has directed a dazzling production of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros and staged works by, among others, Pirandello, Brecht, Camus and Fabrice Melquiot (he was the first to direct Melquiot’s plays). This brilliant, multilingual artist embodies a theatre without borders that travels freely among artistic disciplines and countries.
