On February 28th NAC Foundation donors were treated to a question & answer pre-show chat with Beverley Cooper, playwright of Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott. The audience learned the challenges Beverley experienced in choosing how to approach the project, given that the play is based on a true story. She ultimately decided to create a fictional character, by the name of Sarah, to tell the story though her eyes, giving Beverley some flexibility without compromising true events.

While writing the play, Beverley read hundreds of pages of court transcripts and interviewed a number of people who were both directly and indirectly involved in the case.  During her talk, she revealed how she met Steven Truscott; when he came to the final performance of the original production at the Blyth Festival, he was seated directly in front of her, which allowed her to watch him watch the play…an amazing experience!

See Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott in the NAC English Theatre until March 16, 2013.
